Among the most mystical texts passed down to us from Ancient Egypt stands The Book of the Dead. This is not a book in the modern sense, but a collection of magical formulas, hymns, and spells, written on papyrus and placed in the tombs of the deceased. The Egyptians called it The Book of Coming Forth by Day—because its purpose was to help the soul find its way through the darkness and reunite once more with the light.
The Journey Through the Afterlife
After death, the soul (Ba) faced trials in the underworld (Duat).

There, it was awaited by monsters, gates, and judges, and the spells from The Book of the Dead served as keys and passwords that opened pathways and offered protection from dangers. The soul had to demonstrate knowledge and purity—not only through words, but through its very essence.

The Judgment of Osiris
The most majestic scene is the judgment before Osiris—the lord of the afterlife. There, the heart of the deceased is placed upon the scales and weighed against the feather of the goddess Ma’at, the symbol of truth and harmony. If the heart is light, the soul has lived in accordance with the law of the cosmos and may continue on toward eternity. If it is heavy with sins and falsehoods, it is devoured by the monster Ammit, the “Devourer of Hearts.”

This is not merely a myth—it is a philosophical principle: the true value of a human being lies not in wealth or power, but in the lightness of the heart that has lived in truth.
The Secret of Eternal Life
The Egyptians believed that a human being possesses several aspects:
Ka – the life force that continues to exist after death;
Ba – the soul with individuality, capable of traveling between worlds;
Akh – the enlightened essence that unites with the stars and the gods.
The Book of the Dead served as a guide showing how Ka and Ba could merge into Akh, transforming the mortal human into immortal light.
Philosophical Meaning

The texts of The Book of the Dead convey a universal idea—that life is a preparation for death, and death is a gateway to a new existence. A pure heart, lived in harmony with Ma’at, is the only key to eternal life.
The Testament of the Ancients

Today, The Book of the Dead speaks to us less about otherworldly monsters and trials, and more about inner states.
“To weigh one’s heart” means to live in such a way that it is not burdened by guilt, fear, or deception. The Egyptians believed that true immortality is a state of consciousness—and this is their message to all ages.
