German New Medicine – A New Perspective on Illness and Health

What Is German New Medicine?

German New Medicine (GNM) is a holistic concept of health and illness developed in the late 1970s by the German physician Ryke Geerd Hamer. The core idea of this approach is that every illness has a specific psycho-emotional origin, and that bodily symptoms are not “mistakes,” but biologically meaningful responses of the organism to a deep inner conflict.

According to GNM, the body and psyche are inseparably connected, and illness is part of a natural adaptive process rather than an enemy that must be destroyed.

The Founder – Dr. Ryke Geerd Hamer

Ryke Geerd Hamer (1935–2017) was a physician specialized in internal medicine. After the tragic death of his son in 1978, Dr. Hamer developed severe testicular cancer. This event led him to question whether there was a direct connection between psychological trauma and physical illness.

Thus began his research, which gradually led him to formulate the “Five Biological Laws of Nature”—the foundation of German New Medicine.

The Five Biological Laws According to GNM

1.Law of the Biological Conflict (Dirk–Hamer Syndrome)
Every illness begins with an unexpected emotional shock—a conflict experienced as intense, isolating, and without a solution.

2.Two-Phase Nature of Every Illness
Illness unfolds in two phases—an active (stress) phase and a healing (recovery) phase, if the conflict is resolved.

3.Ontogenetic System of Diseases
Depending on which embryonic layer an organ originates from, its response to conflict will differ—tissues may break down, build up, or change their function.

4.Role of Microbes
Microorganisms are not enemies, but helpers—they support the process of tissue restoration.

5.Biological Meaning of Illness
Every process in the body has a biological meaning—illness is not a mistake, but a survival program activated to help us adapt to a difficult situation.

Interesting Facts About German New Medicine

  • Dr. Hamer discovered that specific “foci” (later called “Hamer foci”) can be seen in the brain on computed tomography scans, corresponding to specific conflicts and organs.
  • He conducted hundreds of clinical observations and claimed that he could trace every illness through a “psycho-biological map” linking conflict, brain center, and organ.
  • Despite its scientific claims, German New Medicine is not accepted by official medicine and is the subject of serious controversy. Nevertheless, around the world there are communities and therapists who use its principles as a complementary or spiritual method for understanding illness.
  • According to its supporters, GNM offers a profound release from the fear of disease, because it shows that the organism acts intelligently and purposefully.

Conclusion

German New Medicine poses a revolutionary question:
What if illness is not an enemy, but a message?

This approach invites each person to look beyond symptoms and discover the emotional root of their physical conditions. Although controversial, GNM opens new paths to self-knowledge and a deeper understanding of the connection between mind, body, and spirit.
